Day 15: Nutritional Analysis

Objectives:
1.    Students will access valid health information from home, school, and community (AAHE 3.8.2).
2.    Students will locate valid and reliable health products and services (AAHE 3.8.5).

Materials:
1.    1 Internet-ready computer for each student.
2.    http://www.mypyramidtracker.gov.
3.    Tutorial program (TrackerTutorial.ppt included in ‘Lesson 15’ folder).
4.    Overhead projector.
5.    Screen.

Procedures: Introduction 2 MINUTES
1.    Greet students.
2.    Tell the students they are beginning the nutritional analysis unit today.
3.    Tell the students they will be tracking their dietary intake for one day (breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks).  They should have already come to class with this information as I told them to the last time I saw them.  If they failed to bring their list in, tell them to quickly write down what they remembered they ate yesterday.

Procedures: Activity 20 MINUTES
1.    Before class begins, have the tutorial powerpoint, projector and screen set up and ready to go.
2.    Tell the students they will view the powerpoint slide by slide as they set their accounts up.
3.    Have the students get their laptop ready.  Tell them to go to http://www.mypyramidtracker.gov (all one word).
4.    Go through each step one at a time while the students follow along by inputting their individual information.  Depending on the class, this may be as far as you get.  If this is the case, have the students put their computers away and watch the rest of the powerpoint that goes through the process of inputting food items for analysis.
5.    Have the students begin inputting their food items.  Have them look at the powerpoint for an example and tutorial.
6.    Tell the students to put general search words in like ‘Big Mac’ or ‘sandwich’ or ‘watermelon.’
7.    When the students find the item, they should select it and move on.  When they are done inputting all of the items, they can go to the right area to get specific regarding serving sizes and number of servings (just follow along with the powerpoint).
8.    As the powerpoint shows, click to analyze dietary values for nutrients and the food groups.
9.    Have the students print off their analysis and hand in to you.
10.    There may be more than one day necessary for this lesson.  If another day is needed, record this so you can plan sufficiently for next year.

Procedures: Conclusion 5 MINUTES
1.    Have the students quickly put their laptops away.
2.    Tell the students they can use this tool any time they want and can track their diets over a long period of time to check for improvement.  They can also track their physical activity this way on the same website.
3.    All of the information they learned about their diets will apply to future lessons when we talk about goal setting.
4.    Dismiss the students.
