| | | Gifted and Talented Resource Room | | Students in grades first through sixth who have been identified for
gifted and talented services through the district testing process or by
teacher recommendation, receive services in the Gifted Services
resource room on a regular basis. All Kindergarten students receive a
weekly group lesson which introduces them to higher order thinking
skills. Once Kindergarten students are identified by the Naglieri
Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT) in February, they also receive direct instruction in
the Resource Room.
The High Flyers classes focus on the
application of higher order thinking skills, creative thinking skills,
and independent products. These activities are literacy based, for
students who have a strong ability in the reading/writing areas.
• First and second grade students learn and practice deductive, inventive, elaborative and evaluative thinking skills. They also complete a project for the Student Showcase.
• Third grade students are involved in an exchange project with students from other St. Paul Public Schools. They classify, compare and contrast, summarize, hypothesize, and share information gleaned from 30 bits and pieces about another student. The fun comes when they get a photo of their partner, of whom they have drawn a portrait, sight unseen!
• Fourth graders are introduced to the Creative Problem Solving process and the invention process. For the Student Showcase, they will present a game of their own invention.
• Fifth graders take invention to the next level by competing in the Young Inventor's Fair. They must research previous inventions and current products that are similar to theirs. After building and testing their invention under a variety of conditions, they complete an application process which includes a technical drawing and photo. If selected as one of the Twin Cities 100 best inventions, they are invited to display their invention at the Landmark Center in April. We have had many students selected for this honor through the years.
• Our sixth grade students are involved in a long-term project under the supervision of a parent volunteer working with the specialist, who happens to be a 3M science wizard! He always comes up with an exciting topic - like trebuchets and hovercrafts! We can't wait to see what we will do this year.
Students who
show a high ability in math attend Enrichment Math class, which focuses
on problem solving and accelerated math enrichment. Students in grades
second through sixth, who participate in Enrichment Math class will
participate in the Continental Math Contest. Students are also provided
with extension math activities for independent work in the regular
classroom.
Students in High Flyers complete a project for the Student Showcase.where they are displayed at the annual Family Picnic in the spring of the school year,
