Like to read?  How did that develop?  How do our children acquire a love of reading for purpose and for pleasure?  Reading skills grow from having a variety of reading experiences.  All students at Randolph Heights participate in Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) our Nation's oldest and largest non-profit children's literacy program.  RIF supports literacy development by encouraging reading and providing students with an opportunity to select three free books at their independent reading level each school year.

RIF began as a resource to put books to into the hands of children.  Each child has the chance to personally select three books according to their individual interests and personal reading level.  Books available for the children's selection run the gamut from simple picture books to classic novels and biographies as well as science, sports, multicultural and current events resources.  A book selection committee chooses new books each spring for the following year.

Read often.  Inspire your child(ren) to read by reading to them, with them and having them read or summarize whatever they have read for you.  Demonstrate how reading and writing come up in your own daily experiences.  Read for the fun of it.  It's the RIF way!
