| | | Introduction to Gifted Services | | Gifted Services at Randolph Heights utilizes the Schoolwide Enrichment
Model (SEM) which provides general enrichment for all students and
educational services and opportunity directly to identified gifted and
talented students. Various levels of services provide for both
enrichment and acceleration of curriculum. Students are
identified by use of the school district test, the Naglieri Nonverbal
Assessment Test (NNAT), which is administered in January.
Students can also be nominated for services by teachers. Students are
assessed in three areas; we look for evidence of above average
achievement, above average creativity, and a high level of task
commitment and motivation.
Some students will be involved in
educational experiences that are of an introductory or exploratory
nature, such as guest speakers, performances, and field trips.
Identified gifted and talented students participate in special classes
in the Gifted Services resource room under the direction of the
specialist. The opportunity exists for students to pursue a personal
interest by completing an independent project. Students
also take part in academic contests and challenges. Enrichment
activities take place throughout the school and are provided by
teachers in all settings. Students flow through the various educational
opportunities as interest and motivation dictate.
Acceleration
of academic subjects is also a focus of the program model; classroom
teachers differentiate the curriculum to meet the needs of students.
The Reader's and Writer's Workshop models allow students to spend time
in the homeroom working with materials at an appropriate level for
their ability.
