| | | | | Welcome to Randolph Heights Specific Learning Disabilities Program | | One of the programs offered to students at Randolph Heights School to meet their academic needs is the Specific Learning Disabilities Program. This program is given to students who meet the criteria set by the State of Minnesota in accordance with the Individual with Disabilities Education Act of 1990 (IDEA).
“Specific learning disability” means a condition within the individual affecting learning. It is manifested by an interference with the acquisition, organization, storage, retrieval, manipulation, or expression of information so that the individual does not learn at an adequate rate when provided with the usual opportunities and instruction from a regular school environement.
A specific learning disability is demonstrated by a significant discrepancy between a pupil’s general intellectual ability and academic achievement in one or more of the following areas: oral expression, listening comprehension, math calculation or reasoning, basic reading and comprehension skills and written expression.
The Child Study Team at RHS shall determine that a child has a specific learning disability and is need of special education and related services when the pupil meets the criteria set by the State and the Saint Paul Public School System. Information must be sought from the parent and included as part of the assessment data.
Once a student meets the criteria , an Individual Educational Plan (IEP) is developed for the student. Students usually stay in the program for three years. A reassement is done after three years of service to determine whether a disability still exits. Currently, students who are in the program receive an average of forty minutes of LD help in the area(s) they qualified. Instruction is done in a small group setting (4-5), a unique aspect of the program that is well received by parents, classroom teachers and students.
