Third Grade Spelling

alphabet

Third grade uses Patricia Cunningham's "Working with Words" word wall lists as our basic spelling list each month.   Classroom activities are built around learning these commonly misspelled words.  Students are tested each Friday until mastery is achieved.  After the basic list is mastered, a challenge list is assigned.   At the end of each month, the basic words are posted on each classroom's "word wall" and are then expected to be spelled correctly every time the student uses them.

Parents/caregivers are encouraged to help students study his/her spelling words.  Here are some activities to try:

•Look for spelling words on every day objects (cereal boxes, newspapers, etc.),

•Practice words

while you're in the car, eating a meal, or waiting in line

•Play "sparkle" - take turns saying each progressive letter of the word, the last person saying "sparkle" and then spelling the entire word

•Build your spelling words - on paper, write the first letter, then the first and second, then the first, second and third, etc. (example:  water= w, wa, wat, wate, water).

Click the link below to see this month's spelling words.

Note:  We are finished with "word wall" spelling words for this year.  We will continue to work on "word sorts" and have bi-weekly tests on these words.  Look for word sorts to come home for homework every other week or so.  Thanks!
