Students in grades first through sixth who have been identified for
gifted and talented services through the district testing process or by
teacher recommendation, receive services in the Gifted Services
resource room on a regular basis. All Kindergarten students receive a
weekly group lesson which introduces them to higher order thinking
skills. Once Kindergarten students are identified by the Naglieri
Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT) , they also receive direct instruction in
the Resource Room.
The High Flyers classes focus on the
application of higher order thinking skills, creative thinking skills,
and independent products. These activities are literacy based, for
students who have a strong ability in the reading/writing areas.
Projects have included creating imaginary cities, building trebuchets,
service learning projects, and creative problem solving, as well as
direct instruction in specific thinking skills.
Students who
show a high ability in math attend Enrichment Math class, which focuses
on problem solving and accelerated math enrichment. Students in grades
second through sixth, who participate in Enrichment Math class will
participate in the Continental Math Contest. Students are also provided
with extension math activities for independent work in the regular
classroom.
It is in the Resource Room that students are led through the
process of researching and sharing an independent project. Topics range
from a "Museum" display of a collection; research and
display of an animal; and whatever might interest a particular
student. These projects are displayed at the annual Family Picnic and
Lightbulb Fair in the spring of the school year,
